Escapist Literature

Updated: Mar 26

One of my favorite book genres is "Adventures to Extreme Cold and Inhospitable Places" i.e. polar exploration and mountain climbing expeditions. Here are some of my favorites - read these and you will greatly appreciate your creature comforts:

The Worst Journey in the World: Antarctic, 1910-13 by Apsley Cherry-Garrard

Considered the best book on polar exploration ever produced, Cherry-Garrard was a member of Robert Falcon Scott's failed expedition to the South Pole. The winter journey to retrieve an emperor penguin egg is a masterpiece worth reading in itself.

"South: The Story of Shackleton's 1914-1917 Expedition" By Sir Ernest Shackleton

Incredible perseverance, courage and leadership to overcome adversity, "South" is based on Shackleton's logs written with great British understatement. (I also recommend the Alfred Lansing's and Caroline Alexander's "Shackleton" books).

Annapurna: The First Conquest Of An 8,000-Meter Peak by Maurice Herzog

1950 may not seem that long ago until you read about the expedition's primitive equipment and challenges with maps to figure out how to get to the mountain.

Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer

At the time the most deadly season on Everest (It has since been surpassed), "Into Thin Air" is a gripping account that raises questions about the risk of modern adventure travel and the Everest continuing moral dilemma.

"Rocky Outcropping (Mt. Harris Rimrocks)" 16" x 20" Oil on Linen Canvas $640
