Kate's Kitties

Size: 9"h x 12"W / frame: 11.25" x 14.25"

Oil on Linen Canvas

"Omg this is really beautiful. Somehow you have managed to capture their personalities, which is incredible considering you never met them. Remembering Tommy, Tad, and Miss Claudie. Thank you to @egilmanart (Emily Gilman Beezley) for creating an incredible Christmas gift. Emily- So glad you gave us the gift of a lifetime. ❤️❤️❤️" - Kate S., Orlando FL

My client recently lost her beloved kitty cat, Tommy. She and her husband adopted him and his brother Tad two days before their wedding. They adopted another kitty (Miss Claudie) a couple of years later from St Martin. This commissioned artwork was a surprise holiday gift for her husband and a memorial to their beloved pets. It provided challenges to get their respective sizes correct as I combined images from multiple photos with guidance from my client. This project really appealed to the cat lover in me!

Pet portraits include a $50 donation in your name to The Spayed Club, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to solving dog and cat overpopulation in the Philadelphia area.

Here is a bit about each of them from my client:

"Tommy is the bigger black and white cat. He had beautiful aqua eyes and for us it was love at first sight. I found him at a pet shop that was doing rescues 2 days before our wedding, when I was picking up my dress. I got buy in, drove to the airport to get my daughter and then back to the shop. She picked out the second kitty (Tad). I have never known a kitty so awesome. My Son in Law HATED cats until he met Tommy. I have had at least a dozen people threaten to “catnap” him.  He just passed away at the age of 16. I still cry. I wanted to name them after our favorite literary characters, with Tommy as Mr. Darcy. But Jim insisted Tad would have to be “Bullwinkle” so dropped that idea.

While Tommy looked like  he was wearing a “wife beater,” Tad was the perfect tuxedo cat. He was not Tommy’s biological brother, but they were inseparable. One of the photos is of the two of them entwined on a dog bed. He had glorious topaz eyes and was so kind. He let our niece dress him in baby clothes! We lost him about 6 years ago – so I have far fewer digital photos. For weeks Tommy would to go to the place he died and just howl.

Miss Claudie (or Mademoiselle Claude) was the third kitty to join us. We found her on St. Martin during a family vacation. We thought she was a he (hence the name) as so many more orange kitties are male. She was feisty and sassy – but had a BIG personality and a bigger purr. She also had topaz eyes. She passed away a year ago. Initially, she only responded when spoken to in French.

Ideally, I would love to see them in one painting.  The only photos I have of the three together are those by the fire in our former home in Connecticut.  I wonder if you can position them a bit better and take out all the Christmas stuff that makes the photo so busy.  I will totally rely on your judgement."
